Nancy Hascall has
performed as a handbell
soloist since 1989 and teaches
solo
and ensemble ringing at all levels, both privately and for regional
and national handbell events. As a performer she has become known
for her graceful ringing style and musical sensitivity, as well as
her dazzling technique and extensive use of multiple-bell ringing
techniques. In her quest for greater musicality and wider
repertoire, Nancy developed a system of techniques called "traveling
four-in-hand,"
which, through economy of motion, enables ringers to play more
musically and negotiate difficult passages with less effort. |
Combining her technical expertise plus
thirty years of music teaching experience, Nancy is able to inspire,
encourage, and communicate with students in a positive and constructive
way. She has authored several articles
on ringing techniques for Overtones, the
professional journal of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers
(AGEHR), and has numerous compositions
and arrangements in print, including works for handbell solo, duet, quartet,
and choir. She recently completed her first CD recording, "Ringing
From the Heart."
Nancy directs a Portland, OR, area community
handbell ensemble,
Bells
of the Cascades and the Sanctuary Bell Choir at
Portland
First United Methodist Church, and has conducted a variety of
massed
ringing events
A
resident of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Nancy is the founder and artistic
director of the Oswego Handbell Ensemble (temporarily on hiatus), along
with her husband Glen, a systems programmer who is also an accomplished
handbell ringer and clinician. Both
Glen and Nancy also ring in the Covenant Bell Choir at Lake
Grove Presbyterian Church where Nancy was
first introduced to handbells more than twenty years ago, and where she
also currently serves as a staff keyboardist.
Nancy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music
Education and Vocal Performance from Albertson
College of Idaho where she
graduated magna cum laude. Prior
to adopting handbells as her profession, she directed church choirs,
taught private lessons in piano and flute, and for 22 years taught music
to young children in the Yamaha Music Education System. |
